Former President Faces 37 Counts, Including Willful Retention of National Defense Information

Charges Stem from Investigation into Trump's Attempts to Overturn 2020 Election

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted on 37 counts, including 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information, in connection with his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment was unsealed on Friday afternoon following a grand jury investigation into Trump's actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

According to the indictment, Trump "corruptly obstructed, interfered with, and defeated the lawful functions of the United States government" by pressuring state officials to change the results of the election, attempting to interfere with the counting of electoral votes, and inciting a mob to attack the Capitol in an effort to prevent Congress from certifying the election results.

The indictment also alleges that Trump unlawfully possessed and retained national defense information, including classified documents, after his presidency ended. This charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to fight the charges. A trial date has not yet been set.
